The Aitkin Lakes Area Rotary club held their annual meeting Thrusday June 23, 2011. Scott Turner was introduced as president by Bernie Novak the outgoing president. It was a very special evening as we were able to award Paul and Sally Eberhardt with Paul Harris Fellow awards in honor of Tom and Elinor Eberhardt who died in a recent airplane crash. In 2008 the Aitkin Lakes Area Rotary club started a journey led by member Tom Eberhardt to the small village of Mto Wa Mbu in Tanzania Africa. In this village Tom had learned about the vast problem with orphans. Tom found a very headstrong woman by the name of Lynn Connell and together we embarked on a project to help situate some of the orphans. With the financial help of the Aitkin Rotary Club, Tom and Lynn and the on site support from Lynn, we were able to rent them a building and furnish it so that 28 wonderful children could be provided a roof over their head, meals and structured learning. Below are some pictures of the orphans.

We participated in the first ever Aitkin grocery grab to benefit the food shelf yesterday. Our team was Tiffany and Scott. Each team had 2 minutes to grab and fill two carts with as much $$ of items as possible. Coming out on top was the Aitkin Lakes Rotary with $1,193.39 worth of groceries. A big congratulations to our team and thank you to Peoples National Bank who sponsored the event. Also a BIG BIG thanks to Paulbeck’s County Market for making this event possible. Here are a few pictures from the event and our team.
